On Friday, September 12, 2025, from 18:00, the Department of Adult and Cancer Nursing hosted a seminar titled Supporting Decision-Making for Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Patients.
The seminar was held in a hybrid format, both in-person and online, and welcomed 38 nursing professionals.
We were honored to invite Ms. Miyuki Kamima, Certified Nurse Specialist from the Cancer Institute Hospital of JFCR, as our guest speaker. Ms. Kamima provided information on fertility preservation therapy for AYA patients, and discussed the process of decision-making support. She also addressed support for young female patients diagnosed with hereditary tumors such as HBOC (Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome), sharing real-life case examples to illustrate her points.
The Q&A session included meaningful exchanges on topics such as decision-making support for male AYA patients regarding fertility preservation, the activities of the fertility preservation support team at the Cancer Institute Hospital, and care for families of patients who tested positive in genetic testing.
Post-seminar survey responses included comments such as:
• “Patients occasionally ask about fertility, so this was extremely informative.”
• “It made me realize the importance of respecting the thoughts of not only the patients but also their partners and families when it comes to fertility preservation and genetics.”
• “The case-based content felt realistic and easy to visualize, prompting ethical reflection.”
• “Although the topic is of high interest, it’s not actively addressed in clinical settings, which gave me much to think about.”
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Miyuki Kamima and everyone who contributed to the seminar’s success. This seminar was held as part of the Training Program for Next-Generation Health Professionals with Cancer Care in Kyushu.
Our department remains committed to promoting practical knowledge and delivering clear, accessible information to support cancer nursing practice.
